Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mary Helen Harris was born in Columbia, South Carolina on February 3, 1928 to Robert and Selene Davis. Their only daughter, she had three brothers, Walter, Eugene and Robert, Jr., all of whom have preceded her in death. Mary married James Harris. This union was blessed with four children, the late George Walter Harris, Barbara Jean Hopkins, James Thomas Harris and Margaret Linda Porter. James was in the U.S. Army and they traveled a great deal throughout his career. In 1961, they were transferred to Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Aurora, CO where he retired and made it their home. Mary worked hard to help support her family. A woman of faith, Mary was a long standing member of Macedonia Baptist Church. In later years, she joined her son, James and their family at Park Hill Seventh Day Adventist Church in Denver. She was very active as a deaconess in her church where she was called "Mother Harris". She loved her church and enjoyed attending services and bible study. In her free time, Mary loved to travel with her friends, play card games, go shopping, and have family dinners. Mary loved to cook and make pies for her grandsons. Mary will best be remembered for her peach cobbler and cabbage. Mary loved all fresh flowers. Her favorite comment was, "Give me my flowers while I am living." Mary lived a blessed, fulfilling and joyful life and on January 22, 2015, Mary went home to be with the Lord. She is survived by one son, James (Cherry) Harris; two daughters, Barbara Hopkins and Margaret (William) Porter; ten grandchildren; twenty-five great grandchildren; seven great great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins; and many loved and devoted friends. Mary was loved by many and she will be greatly missed.
