The sun rose on the life of Ms. Dorothy Cody Wilson on September 24, 1929 in Stateville, North Carolina when she was born to Odell Morrison and Maymie Frost Bruner. The third of seven children, she had two brothers, Odell, Jr. and Phillip and four sisters, Corrine, Eula, Evelyn and Joyce. As a child, she was always playing hopscotch, jacks and playing house. She loved to read and wanted to go to the West. Educated in the public school system, Dorothy graduated from Morningside High School in Stateville. She continued her education at the University of Columbia Nursing School. She also studied at Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center for three years majoring in Theory and Practice of nursing. Dorothy proudly served her country in the United States Air Force from June, 1953 to March, 1955. She was stationed at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado. Her final rank was Second Lieutenant. She was honored with an Award of Appreciation at Lowry and later with a Certificate of Achievement from the Department of the Army at Fitzsimmons. She left her active duty with an Honorable Discharge from the Air Force and a grateful nation. Dorothy was the loving and devoted mother of four beautiful children; sons, Kevin and Terry and daughters, Andre and Brendalyn. They remember that she always loved them and stressed that "we should all come together and forget about the past." She also loved her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren intensely. A woman of faith, Dorothy was a member of Church In The City for over 20 years. She served as a Greeter, volunteered in the kitchen and volunteered at the Wellington Webb Building in downtown Denver. By profession a Registered Nurse, Dorothy was employed at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital. In her free time, she enjoyed family, friends and going to the mountains. Her best friends, Kat Keaton, Betty Byers, Jeona Harper, Niva Sloan, Janet Valdez and Joan Barber loved her for being genuine and unprejudiced. She loved her family and all children. Her love, wisdom and strength will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. The sun set on the life of Ms. Dorothy Cody Wilson on July 3, 2016 when the Lord called her home to eternal rest.
