Obituary of Emelda Ann Glapion
Please share a memory of Emelda to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
The sun rose on the life of Mrs. Emelda Ann Glapion on July 27, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois when she was born to Barissa Brooks and Arthemese Butler. The second child of seven in a family of all girls, Emelda had six sisters, Brenetta, Evelyn, Yvonne, Louise, Michelle and Mary Ann. A happy and considerate child, Emelda always brought all their friends a quarter bag of pecans because she knew everyone liked them. Even at a young age, she had an incredible fashion sense; like mixing plaids and polka dots; "walking around dressed to the 9's". Educated in the parish school system, Emelda graduated from St. Elizabeth High School in Chicago. She continued her education and became a certified EKG Technician. On January 20, 1955, Emelda was united in marriage with the love of her life, Urbain A. Glapion, Jr. whom she had known from childhood. The couple exchanged their vows at the Cook County Courthouse in Chicago. To this union were born five precious children, Linda, Lisa, Urbain, Catherine and Lorie. The couple later adopted three of their grandchildren, Tajia, Kezia and Tristan after the death of their mother. The children remember, "Daddy always called Mom "Squirt" and she could always make him laugh." She was a loving mother and devoted military wife, always at his side. Her grandchildren, Eric and Aaron (and the three that they adopted) called her "Mom" or "Nana" and loved playing Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune with her. She also spent time ironing the girls' hair. They remarked, "Thank you for everything, We love you. Emelda was employed at Rose Medical Center in Denver, Colorado for over thirty years in the position of Central Supply Technician. The last ten years of her professional life were spent working with the Denver Public School System in the position of "Lunchroom Mom". She was known for hard work, kindness and dependability. Everyone loved working with her. When not working, Emelda enjoyed sharing quality time with family and friends, playing bingo, bowling, going to Central City and the Candlelites Social Club. Her close friends were Virginia Plummer, Kathy Carr, Tammy True, Jasmine, Dominic, Ella and Jaliyah. All of her friends appreciated her for being non judgmental and having that listening ear always available for anyone who needed it. Emelda's favorite color was red. She loved red roses and her favorite music was blues and gospel. Words that come to mind when anyone thinks of Emelda are loving and fun. Her most lasting impact on all were her loving kindness, un-conditional love and open door policy to all. To know Emelda was to love her and she will be greatly missed. "Nana, you were the best. You were so fun to be around. Thanks for always being my teammate on the Price is Right. I remember when we always watched Family Feud and talked about going on the show someday. Thanks for telling Mom 'yes' every once in a while when I wanted some candy even when Mom said, 'no'. It's true, Nana you always gave the best hugs and kisses." Love always and forever, Maurice Robinson Great Grandson The sun set on the life of Mrs. Emelda Ann Glapion on October 14, 2016 when she passed into eternal rest.
