Obituary of Dorothy Hoskins-Payne
Please share a memory of Dorothy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dorothy Lucinda Hoskins-Payne was born June 7, 1920 to George and Leona Lane just outside Lenapah in Nowata County Oklahoma. She was devoted to God all of her life and a member of Union Baptist Church most of her life. She was the fourth of five children - older brothers David, George and Albert and sister, Celestine. Her mother died when she was four years old shortly after the birth of her younger sister. She was a teenager when her father died and she was forced into being the woman of the house. She attended Lenapah High School and was a member of a graduating class that had seven or eight members. Dorothy was married three times. Her husbands were Mencer Underwood, James Hoskins and Menifee (Joe) Payne. All three are deceased. She had three children - Emma Lucinda (Cindy), George and Carolyn. After the start of World War II Dorothy's brothers went off to war and she and the children moved to Kansas City where she worked at two different war plants. Her job was cooking powder that was used in bombs. Following the war she moved to Fort Warren in Cheyenne, Wyoming with her husband and her first two children. After two years in Wyoming she moved back to Kansas City where she graduated from Madam C.J. Walker's beauty school. She owned and operated a small, one chair beauty shop in Kansas City, Kansas before moving to Denver in 1950. In Denver Dorothy began her lifelong membership at Union Baptist Church. She worked briefly as a nurse aide at Presbyterian Hospital before landing a job in the mail room at the Denver Department of Welfare. She had advanced to the position of supervisor of the keypunch department when she retired 30 years later.
She continued singing in the choir at Union after retiring. She also joined the Eastern Stars Organization in Southern California. Dorothy also loved to travel with family by motor home. She had owned three different motor homes before gasoline prices made that mode of travel too expensive. Dorothy, known by many pet names; "Dot, Mother, Mommie, Big Mama, Saint Dorothy, Phope, Grandma, Sister, Princess, Nurse, Lady, Heroine of Jerico, Daughter, Hat Lady McGuiver, Queen and Blessed" was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. Dorothy's Famous Sayings "Life could be great if you don't get weary, but everybody gets tired sometimes." "Take what you got and make what you need," "It says in the bible, If you don't work you don't eat." "Every pot of age must sit on it's own bottom." "My name is Bess and I'm not in this mess," "Use your head for more than a hat rack." The Lord called Dorothy L. Hoskins-Payne home to eternal reward on October 30, 2016. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, her husbands, oldest daughter, Cindy Daniel, and her oldest granddaughter, Rhonda Durst. At the top of five generations, Dorothy is survived by a son George Lane of Denver and daughter Carolyn (Paul) Underwood-Conley of Southern California, eight grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 13 great great grandchildren and 2 great great great grand-children
