Obituary of Lucretia James
Please share a memory of Lucretia to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Lucretia James was born on April 3, 1925 in Centreville Mississippi to her parents, Andrew Hayes and Irene Jones. She was the younger of two children. She had one sister Margaret Hayes. As a child she was always very smart and “bossy” according to her sister Margaret. She received her education from Centreville Public Schools.
On October 19, 1943, she married Willie James in Centreville Mississippi. She was a military wife and lived in Utah, Cheyenne Wyoming and finally settled down in Denver, CO. To this union nine children were born. Willie Jr., (Barbara), Andrew (Allison), Margaret, Dorothy (Edward), Larry, Patricia, Raymond (Annette) and Brenda. She had two nieces and one nephew and a host of grand - children, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She deeply loved and cared for them all.
Lucretia passed down many family traditions. One tradition that carried on for the past 20 plus years, was her infamous New Year’s Day dinner. On this particular day we would share laughter, memories and one of her favorite customs which was placing a small portion of black eyed peas in your wallet for good luck.
She was a member of Kinship Baptist Church. She loved reading her bible and the radio was always playing her favorite gospel station. In her free time, she enjoyed gardening, planting flowers and especially tending to her rose bush. Sewing, cooking, reading and fishing were also some of her favorite hobbies. She loved to dress up and look her best. Pearls were her favorite accessory. She enjoyed thrift stores, garage sales, and looking for the best bargains.
She had numerous friends and will be best remembered by them for her kindness and generosity.
Lucretia passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family, on November 4, 2020 at the age of 95. She is preceded in death by her husband Willie, and her son Richard.
