Obituary of Mother Gwendolyn Ann Guss
Please share a memory of Mother Gwendolyn to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
The sun rose on the life of Gwendolyn Ann Guss on November 6, 1937, in Little Rock, Arkansas when she was born to Aristede Watkins, Sr. and Mamie Marie Watkins. The oldest of four children born to this union, Gwendolyn had two brothers, Aristede Jr., and Dwight, and one sister, Dorothy. As a child, she grew up on the same block with Ernest Green at 22 Howard St. who just happen to be one of the Little Rock 9.
Educated in the public school system, Gwendolyn graduated from Dunham High School in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Gwendolyn met Harvey Lee Guss through his sister and eventually they were united in marriage. Harvey later joined the United States Airforce where Gwendolyn than became a military wife. They were soon blessed with their only child, Christopher Lee. She was the proud and devoted grandmother of Dekese whom she loved dearly just as he did her.
Gwendolyn was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church and later joined Shorter AME Church where she was an active member for over 40 years.
By profession, she was a security guard for Dish Network where she was employed for 25 years.
In her free time, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, and traveling. Her best friends the late Mother Selena Coburn, Lois Harrison, Irene Guss, the late Virginia Guss, and Judy Alexander always cherished her friendship and loyalty that she so often and lovingly showed.
Her favorite color was purple, she loved all types of flowers, and the sounds of jazz, gospel, and blues music.
Everyone always called her Mrs. Guss and she was very outspoken at times along with being very outgoing.
This loving, kind, caring, sweet, and beautiful lady will be deeply missed. To know Gwendolyn was to love her.
The sun set on the life of Mother Gwendolyn Ann Guss on July 22, 2023, in Aurora, Colorado when she passed from this life into her eternal rest in the heavens.
She is preceded in death by her parents, siblings Dwight and Dorothy, and her husband.
