Obituary of Woodrow Dowell
Please share a memory of Woodrow to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
The sun rose on the life of Woodrow Dowell on December 12, 1942, in Birmingham, Alabama when he was born to Woodrow Dowdell, Sr. and Mary Alice May. The first out of two children born to this union, Woodrow had one brother Andrew, and one stepsister Margaret. As a child, he was independent, book smart, and the life of the party. One day Woodrow was playing outside in the creek behind his father’s home and being rambunctious as a young man by chasing girls. He would watch his brother get in trouble for the things he did. He was also a momma’s boy, and never did any wrong in her eyes.
Educated in the public school system, Woodrow graduated from Reading High School in Reading, Pennsylvania.
Woodrow later joined the United States Air Force where he served from 1961-1987, and his final rank was MSGT. He was stationed in Iceland, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, Texas, Kansas, and Colorado. He received many awards while serving, like the Air Force Commendation Medal and multiple certificates for management and trainings.
Woodrow was married three times and out of those three marriages he was blessed with four children, Curtis, Dana, Lo, and Roxann whom he loved all dearly. The children remember feeling a sense of pride when they would see him in his military uniform.
He was the proud grandfather of Tyrael, Ana Alicia, Drew, Monique, Terrell, Romondo, and Mari who called him “Gpw”, “Papa”, “GP Dub”, and “Grandpa Woody” just to name a few. The grandchildren, Mari remembers playing dominoes, poker, blackjack at a young age with him. Drew remembers him letting them drink Ginger ale and them thinking they were grown. Monique reflects on how he made them think that he was President Woodrow Wilson. Ty also reflects on how they would clean the chicken bones until everything was gone. Romondo remembers his grandfather saying sugar don’t go in no grits, and Deron reflects on how he was always calling someone broke and talking about money.
Woodrow was a member of the American Legion for more than 20 years where he served as an active member.
By profession, he was a supply management superintendent in the AirForce and an aircraft supervisor. In Saudi Arabia he was also an aircraft supervisor for three years. He retired from United Airlines after 10 years of service.
In his free time, he enjoyed watching boxing, going to the gym, and playing racquet ball. He also maintained close relationships with his employees and fellow servicemen.
His favorite colors were nothing bright, his favorite flower was Mary Jane, along with the sounds of jazz and blues music.
Woodrow was a family man and always made sure that his family was all straight. He had the best jokes and was fun loving, but still a disciplinarian man.
This loving, thoughtful, kind, and caring man will be deeply missed. To know Woodrow was to love him.
The sun set on the life of Mr. Woodrow Dowell on February 9, 2024, in Broomfield, Colorado when he passed from this life into his eternal rest.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Andrew Dowell, stepsister Margaret Sue Marrow, and daughter Lo Washington.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Curtis Dowell of Allen, TX, Dana (Willie) Speed of Dennison, TX, and Roxann Dowell of Centennial, CO; 7 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
