Obituary of Ruby Lee Horton

The sun rose on the life of Mrs. Ruby Horton on October 21, 1929 in Mt. Sterling, Alabama when she was born to Julius James and Isabella-Miles James. The fifth of eleven children, she had three brothers, Willie, Jesse and Henry and seven sisters, Lula, Minnie, Lillie, Mary, Beulah, Aretha and Rosie. As a child, she was always running away from the cotton fields. She once fell into the fire while swinging from the mantle. She was always able to pick up hot things after that due to the nerve damage to her hand from the burn. On February 9, 1955, Ruby was united in marriage with Alonzo Scott Horton in Mississippi. The couple met in Tuscaloosa, AL. They enjoyed traveling and family outings and camping across the country. To this union were born three children, Geraldolyn, Cherrelyn and Gregory. A devoted wife and loving mother, she was the number one cheerleader for her children. She always had them involved in activities whether they wanted to or not. Her grandchildren, Micah, Courtney, Brittany, Chelsie, Chasidy, Gregory and Ian always loved "Grandma's" cooking. She always tried to be at all of their activities and gave them a dollar for every year of their life on their birthdays. A woman of faith, Ruby was a member of Jordan A.M.E. Church. She served the Lord and her church as president of the Lay Society, choir member and choir president, the Missionary Society and YPD director. "She loved the young people." For many years, she was the heart of the feeding program at Jordan A.M.E. She was employed as a domestic worker in private homes where she was respected and loved. Ruby was a business owner who ran a successful custom design and tailoring company and she was also recognized for her sales for Princess House Crystal whom she represented. Ruby was also a CNA at Mercy Hospital. In her free time, Ruby enjoyed family, friends, sewing, upholstery, baking rum cakes and rolls and dressing up. She loved to travel. "Ruby loved her family and was a devoted mother, grandmother and church mother, but God was always first in her life." Her love, caring, strength and faith will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to have shared Ruby's life. The sun set on the life of Mrs. Ruby Lee Horton on February 19, 2016 when the Lord called her home to eternal rest. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents and several siblings. Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Gregory (Catrina) Horton of Fountain, CO; daughters, Geraldolyn (Marvin) Harris of Mount Prospect, IL and Cherrelyn (Stanley) Napue of Denver, CO; brother, Willie James of Athens, GA; sisters, Minnie L. Williams of Denver, CO and Lula Blanks of Lismon, AL; 7 grand-children; 7 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
