My brother Gerard was always there when I needed him. When I was little he always protected me from my other two brothers who always picked on me. I always ran behind Gerard to protect me. He always did!
I don't remember a lot growing up because Gerard was the oldest and I was the youngest with about 8 years or so difference in age.
I remember him going to a private school and picking him up in St. Paul on school breaks. He went to St. John's High School and Prep and afterwards Nazareth Hall. He was even considering priesthood.
Gerard was always there when I was in trouble and he'd always come pick me up when I was stuck somewhere and couldn't get home. No matter what time of day or night, he'd come bail me out. A lot of the time he was the ONLY one who cared enough to do so.
When I was hard on my luck and couldn't find anywhere to live, he let me live with him in his apartment in St. Paul. I remember it well. We had lots of meals together and that's when he was a vegetarian, and he made the best vegetarian spaghetti! I wish now I could go back and re-live those days with him. He was so understanding and nice to his 'little' sister who was really just trouble at that time. But he put up with me! He was so patient and sweet to me.
Then when he moved to Hudson, WI and I moved to an apartment of my own, every week he'd pick me up and we'd go visit mom and dad. Every Sunday rain or shine he'd come and get me in his little, green Fiat! That was a cool car and I felt so cool driving in it with him!
Then Gerard got a job in Colorado and he moved. I know it was sad when he left. He would come and visit every once in a while. He always came home to Minnesota. He always made sure he'd visit everyone of his siblings at their house and his best friend Dave Reynolds. He was so faithful. It was always nice when he came over to my house to visit with my two boys. Sometimes he'd come home in the summer, sometimes for Christmas. It was so nice to see him. He came home to MN to be a sponsor for my son Casey when he was baptized.
One year, for my mom's and dad's anniversary, he surprised them and hid in a big box! When they opened the wrapping on the box, out popped Gerard! Everyone was so glad to see him and it was so much fun to have him home!
I wish I would have visited him in Colorado, before he got sick. I am so glad I was able to be a caregiver to him and visit him once a month and sometimes twice a month.
Gerard had a very hard and painful life. He suffered much humiliation, lonliness, rejection, predudice, sickness and disease. If I could, I'd go back and try to make it all better for him. But Gerard was a private person and never complained. He only asked how everyone else was doing. But he was suffering inside.
I love my brother so much! As I went through his things I was able to piece together some of his life. He didn't deserve all the suffering in his life. He was a good man! He was a very intelligent man! He was a very hard worker and never gave up! Not once! He was a brave man and very lovable. Most of all he was a humble man. I am so proud to have a brother like him! I am very blessed in fact!
I had many intimate conversations with Gerard. We shared many things. Things he didn't know about me and things I didn't know about him. Private things that he never shared with anyone else and that I never shared with anyone else either.
I was very blessed to get to know my brother again in the last 18 months of his life. He taught me so much! He taught me that it's ok to just be yourself! He taught me about love. He taught me that it's ok to follow your dreams, even though people may not understand them. Even if people look down on you! And so many people did!
Gerard, I love everything you are! I love your house! I love your cats! I love your Barbies! I love your stubborness, but who isn't stubborn? I love your garden in the back and the little graveyard you made for your loving cats! Your cats were your family! They understood you! They loved you! Gerard I love you! I'm so glad I got to know you again! I feel sorry for all the people who rejected your love, because they missed out on the greatest thing!
Gerard, I am so blessed to be your sister! I know there were some rough times, but I am so thankful I was able to be there for you. I'm so thankful I got to know your friends. You were so proud to introduce me and all your family to them. You were always so happy and thankful we came. You are so faithful and loving and caring!
Most of all I am so very blessed to have been there for you in the end. To be there for you! To pray with you and for you! To hold your hand and to hug you! And to whisper in your ear, I love you Gerard! I love you!
I miss you more and more each day and as this first anniversary of your passing is nearing, I wish you were here once more....I miss you Gerard! I love you Gerard! You are the best brother a girl could ever have! Thank you Gerard for being my brother, my friend and my confidant! Thank you for all you did for me! I love you so much and I can't wait to see you again some day! Until then, my dearest brother, rest easy and please pray for me. I will always be praying for you! To my dear brother Gerard. I am so blessed to have gotten to know you a lot better in the last eighteen months. I remember coming to see you when you first got so sick. I treasure every second I had with you and the memories we shared. The heartfelt talks we shared and realizing that we were very much alike. I saw you change each time I would come to visit you. You loved the Lord so much and although your Faith was shaken many years before, you accepted the Truth and came back to the Church just one short month ago. I saw before my eyes the subtle changes. God was working in you and through you. I am so very lucky and blessed to have been able to be there with you as you took your final breathes. It was heartbreaking, yet I knew you had no more pain. I held your hands and face and kissed your sweet face. Your journey of suffering was over. You received the last Viaticum the day before you passed, and you were anointed just a few short hours before you drew that last breath. I am so blessed to have you as my brother and my friend. You were always there for me when I was growing up, now you'll be with me always in Spirit. I called you my 'sweet heart' because you are such a sweet person. You never complained but always asked how others were. You truly cared and loved every person. God took my brother home but he'll always be missed and loved by all who knew him, especially me. My dearest brother, Thank you for the time we had and most of all thank you for being my brother. And I thank God for allowing me to be with him in the final moments of his short life. I love you SO MUCH Gerard!
