Obituary of Lewey Whitfield Thomas, Jr.

Lewey Whitfield Thomas Jr. known by many of his family and friends as “Lew Dog,” was born October 23rd, 1970 in Denver, Colorado to parents Lewey Thomas Sr. and Lonetta Askew. Lonetta’s relational journey continued when she met Thomas Richardson. Lewey was the second youngest child in their union. Thomas played a very important and significant role throughout Lewey’s entire life. He had eighteen brothers and sisters. As a child Lewey was a stubborn momma’s boy. One time when they were younger, Lonetta took the children to get a throat culture to be checked for strep throat but when it was Lewey’s turn he refused to open his mouth, so the nurses pinched his nose together. Since he couldn’t breathe because his nose was pinched, he decided to only open his lips and breathe through his teeth, still refusing to open his mouth all the way. Lonetta said she was going to get Thomas and that’s when Lewey’s mouth flew open. The nurses shoved the swab down his throat and after they were done, Lewey was so angry he clinched his fists and stumped out of the room. Another story from when he was young is when he hit his brother Brian in the head with a coffee mug. After hitting his brother, Lewey ran and hid under the bed. His mother Lonetta found Lewey under the bed and boy…was he in trouble. Lewey hated being in trouble so he did what he does best, charm. He used his charm to try and cozy back up with him mom saying the sweetest things over and over again. He continued to ask her, “Can I touch you,” and “Can I put my quarter in your purse.” He attended Smith and McMeen Elementary. Next, he attended Place Middle School. For high school he attended South, Mumford in Detroit and Manual. During Lewey’s high school years, Lonetta briefly moved to Detroit, MI where Lewey attended Mumford High School. While attending Mumford he got heavily involved into weightlifting and when they returned to Colorado, he looked as many would describe as The Incredible Hulk. He had a solid physique that stuck with him throughout his life. After high school he started working at Target and then went on later to work for Safeway where he stayed employed for 22 years. On August 5th, 1989, he became the proud father of Lace Walker, on August 15th, 1992 the proud father of Arianna Mercado, and on June 5th, 1996 the proud father of Trejon Walker. Lewey enjoyed going out and by doing so he met his wife, Sabrina Henry. The first time they met was in a night club where both Lewey and Sabrina took a picture together and they both left the night club that evening with each other’s phone number and a copy of the picture that they took together. Lewey knows what he likes and decided that he was going to pursue what he wanted, which was Sabrina. After a two-year pursuit, Lewey and Sabrina became a couple. The two moved in together and on November 22nd, 2000, they tied the knot to become a married couple. During the early years of their marriage they enjoyed countless days of travel, shooting pool and spending time with friends and family. Then on May 6th, 2004 they welcomed their youngest son, Elijah Thomas. He further pursed his dreams and obtained his CDL and briefly worked for Coors and Denver International Airport, then transitioned into his most recent opportunity with the City of Aurora. Lewey was a hardworking man that loved his family with all his heart. He had the most beautiful smile and the biggest heart. The love that he had for his family and friends was so genuine and pure that he would take the shirt off his own back to give it to a loved one. Lewey was very outspoken with the ability to stand in his truth. He made his strong presence felt both physically and mentally. As a leader in the family he was very logical. He taught life lessons, instilling on his children, nieces, and nephews to go after their dreams. He made sure to teach them the importance of being able to provide for yourself and keeping your credit together. He went further to teach them to be there for one another. Most importantly, Lewey taught us all and made it known that life is hard but always push through with your head held high PERIOD. He also enjoyed so many things. He enjoyed freestyling and music, spending many nights with his family and friends rapping and listening to music. One of his favorite songs was “Am I Dreaming,” by Escape and Keith Sweat. He enjoyed movies, anime, national geographic shows, and Love and Hip-Hop. Going to the movies was something that he did often. A couple of his favorite movies that he loved to watch with his girls was Thin Line between Love and Hate and a Player’s Club. A precious memory never forgotten is when he would make chocolate pancakes for his children on the weekends. He enjoyed walking, riding his bicycle and playing pool. He enjoyed traveling. One of his favorite hobbies was practicing and playing basketball with his family and his most prideful part of that hobby was practicing, playing and watching his son Elijah play basketball. Lewey was a strong believer of the Lord. He studied the word of the Bible every Sunday and grew on to develop a very close relationship with God. Lewey’s care, love, inspiration, influence, and most of all, his physical presence will be deeply missed by everyone who was blessed to create precious memories with him. He was proceeded in death by his father Lewey Thomas Sr. and his daughter Tuess Walker. On the afternoon of Tuesday, December 1st, 2020, Lewey Whitfield Thomas Jr. was able to hold the hand of his baby girl Tuess as he went on his next journey to be with the Lord. Although Lewey touched the hearts of everyone he met and was deeply loved by so many, the Lord decided that it was time to bring his angel home. Left to remember and carry on his legacy are his wife, Sabrina Henry of Aurora, CO; his daughters Lace Walker of Maricopa, AZ; Arianna Mercado of Lindenhurst, IL; his sons Trejon Walker and Elijah Thomas of Aurora, CO; his parents Lonetta Askew, Thomas Richardson and Clara Henry of Aurora, CO; his sisters Pamela Williams, Karen Johnson, Frances Turner, Frances Martinez, Kimberly Guerrero, Alicia Martinez, Winona Thompson, Alexis Rodriguez, Brandi Cunningham, Jean Henry, Leslie Henry, Janet Henry, Tonya Henry, all of Denver and Aurora, CO; Rose Washington of Columbus, MS; Joann Henry of Chicago, IL; Paula Henry of Mesa, AZ; his brothers Ronald Thomas, Kenneth Thomas, Brian Thomas, Bruce Thomas Sr., Michael Thomas Sr., Christopher Thomas, Vincent Thomas, William Pride and Brad Thomas all of Denver and Aurora, CO; Willie Henry of Huntsville, AL.; his twelve grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and many friends.
